Matt Ryan is hot in 2012, but is JJ Watt hotter? … Wait…
We’ll start this post with once again acknowledging it’s way too early to be discussing the MVP of the entire 2012 season. However, we’ll ignore that fact for a brief moment and point out that NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal has Texans defensive lineman JJ Watt over Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan in that race.
Watt has had a monster year so far with 9.5 sacks and 34 tackles. Simply put: He’s a beast.
Ryan, however, has also put up career numbers with 2,018 yards, 17 touchdowns and a passer rating of 103.
Comparing the two positions is difficult. To me, a quarterback is always going to have a bigger impact than any other position. With the season Watt is having, however, it’s tough to argue that he shouldn’t at least be considered near the top of the list. A defensive player hasn’t won the league’s MVP award since 1986, according to Rosenthal.
