Peria Jerry could be back at practice by the end of the week

Head coach Mike Smith updated the conditions of defensive tackle Peria Jerry and linebacker Sean Weatherspoon during his weekly day-after news conference, and the outlook is very positive for the two key defensive players.

Weatherspoon was held out of Sunday’s game due to an ankle injury sustained during last week’s win over Philadelphia. Smith said he’s hopeful that Weatherspoon will return to practice by late in the week.

“Sean, as you guys saw, was on the sideline. I saw him moving up and down the sideline, helping us and assisting us with making sure everyone knew what the calls were,” Smith said. “He was doing a very nice job last night. He will be a guy that we hope will get out here at the end of the week. He’s been, basically, in treatment now, this is his eighth day of intensive treatment and we’re hoping that we’re going to be able to get him out.”

Smith added that he’ll have a better idea of where Weatherspoon is once the Falcons get into Wednesday and Thursday, but also said, depending on how things progress during the week, Weatherspoon could be a game-time decision on Sunday at New Orleans.

Jerry left Sunday night’s game against Dallas in the first half with a knee injury and did not return. After getting a closer look at the knee today, Jerry is expected to be back out with the team practicing later this week.

“It’s not anything his knee injury of two years ago,” Smith said, adding that there’s no ligament or cartilage issues and that it’s more of a swelling problem. “So we’re hoping that we get him a few day’s rest and let him get a lot of treatment and he’ll be back out there with us.”
