For the second week in a row, linebacker Sean Weatherspoon will be held out of a game with an ankle injury, head coach Mike Smith said Thursday.

Weatherspoon suffered the ankle injury against the Eagles in Week 8 and sat out of last Sunday’s win over the Cowboys.

Smith had hope that Weatherspoon would be back practicing by the end of the week with the hope that he may be a game-time decision for Sunday’s 1 p.m. game against New Orleans at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

“We felt like Sean would be a real, real stretch these first two weeks and feel like he’s making progress,” Smith said. “He’ll be looking to get back out here the first part of next week. We’ll keep him in the training room the rest of this week.”

LB Mike Peterson will likely take over for Weatherspoon in base defense and LB Akeem Dent will likely play for Weatherspoon in sub packages.

Smith announced that WR Kevin Cone would not play against the Saints, as well.
