Head coach Mike Smith provided an update on cornerback Asante Samuel and safety William Moore during his Monday news conference with the Atlanta media.

Samuel, who has been bothered by a shoulder injury, was announced as active for Sunday’s game against Carolina, but didn’t end up playing in the game. Smith said the intention was to only use Samuel in an emergency situation — that is, only if an injury occurred in the secondary — so that the Falcons wouldn’t have to go into the game with only seven active defensive backs.

Moore, who didn’t practice last week due to a hamstring injury, wasn’t ready to play, Smith said, and a determination will be made on Moore on Wednesday to see if he’ll be available to practice next week.

Smith said he expects Samuel — who also did not practice last week — to practice Wednesday.
