
The Falcons did their part with a 34-0 win over the New York Giants on Sunday, but two teams that could have helped at least guarantee the Falcons one of the top two seeds in the NFC during the postseason didn’t come through.
The Falcons needed the Packers to lose to the Bears and the 49ers to lose to the Patriots on Sunday in order to clinch the No. 1 seed. The Packers beat the Bears 21-13 at 1 p.m., putting that scenario out of reach this week.
The Falcons still had a chance to earn a first-round bye if San Francisco lost to New England, but the 49ers jumped out to a 31-3 lead in the third quarter Sunday night. The Patriots put together a remarkable comeback to tie the game, but the Niners pulled away to win 41-34.
Atlanta heads to Detroit this week for a Saturday night game against the Lions at Ford Field. A win locks up the No. 1 seed for the Falcons.
