Wider Fields Coming to NFL?

It’s the time of year when changes are proposed and sometimes made as the league’s Competition Committee reviews every aspect of the game and determines what, if anything, needs to be altered in the game.

Former Competition Committee member Bill Polian told National Football Post’s Dan Pompei that the NFL should consider widening the field, saying that it would make the game safer. Said Polian to Pompei:

It’s a radical idea, but I think it’s worth thinking about. You would have more space and perhaps a safer game. I say that based on my CFL experience. There are less collisions of that type in the Canadian game.”

The Canadian version of the game comes with some slight differences than what Americans are used to, including field size. The Canadian fields are 195 feet wide while fields in the NFL are 160 feet wide.

With the league’s initiative to constantly make the game safer, wider fields could be something the Competition Committee looks at when they meet before the Combine. Changes that affect the play of the game aren’t outside the realm of possibility. Two years ago, the Competition Committee changed kickoffs from the 30 to the 35-yard-line to limit kick returns in an effort to reduce concussions.

The move worked as the league saw concussions reduced 43 percent over the previous year.

What do you think about wider fields?
