Falcons head coach Mike Smith spoke to the media assembled at the NFL Scouting Combine and fielded questions from free agency to April’s NFL Draft, but he was also asked to give an update on cornerback Brent Grimes, who spent much of 2012 on injured reserve.

The prognosis at this point, however, looks positive, according to Smith.

“Brent Grimes has been doing an outstanding job with our Athletic Performance department, working in the training room. He is progressing well,” Smith said Friday. “Again, that was a significant injury that took place in Kansas City on opening weekend, but he is progressing well.”

Grimes suffered an Achilles injury during the Falcons’ season-opener against the Chiefs and missed the rest of the season. Smith said the turnaround for that type of injury is around nine months.

“He has not been working outside,” Smith said. “He’s still in the training room, but he’s progressing very well.”
