It didn’t take long during Monday’s retirement ceremony for Todd McClure for a vital question to receive a definitive answer: Will McClure be a member of the Falcons’ Ring of Honor?

“Jeff Van Note is in our Ring of Honor; he should be,” Falcons owner & chairman Arthur Blank said to open the ceremony, before looking at McClure and speaking directly to him. “You’ll be up there, as well.”

As if there was any debate.

McClure’s storied career is certainly deserving of the honor and his name is worthy of being spoken in the same breath as the other Ring of Honor members — Steve Bartkowski, William Andrews, Deion Sanders, Tommy Nobis, Jessie Tuggle, Claude Humphrey and Van Note.

When he got to the podium and was asked about Blank’s assurance, McClure struggled to express his gratitude.

“I don’t know if I have the right words for that,” McClure said. “I mean, you look up in the rafters and you see those names — Bartkowski, Tuggle, Van Note, Sanders — you look up and you see those names and to be mentioned in those names, I don’t feel worthy.”

Blank, speaking for many Falcons fans, made it clear that McClure is deserving of the honor.

“There’s not many folks who end up in that ring for us over many, many years, and you deserve to be in the Ring of Honor,” Blank said, “and as soon as we can get you in there, we’ll do it.”
