Ryan Not Affected By Changes in QB Room

Matt Ryan has seen a lot of change in his professional career with the Falcons. From offensive coordinators to quarterback coaches to teammates, change seems to be a constant so far in Ryan’s six-year career.

Perhaps one of the few other constants is current quarterbacks coach Glenn Thomas, who has been in the building — albeit not in the same position as he is now — since Ryan first set foot in Flowery Branch. Thomas’ job, too, has changed a lot in the past year. After all, a year ago at this time, Thomas was getting ready to hit minicamp with Ryan and veteran backups Chris Redman and John Parker Wilson, who had been mainstays in Ryan’s career.

Soon after, the Falcons parted ways with both backup quarterbacks to make way for then-rookie backup Dominique Davis and eventually veteran Luke McCown.

These days, Thomas and Ryan sit in a quarterback meeting room that boasts just one year of NFL experience divided between three backup quarterbacks — Davis, who’s entering his second year, seventh-round pick Sean Renfree and college free agent Seth Doege.

“It’s been an interesting dynamic from a coach’s perspective having to meet Matt’s needs, as far as what he needs from film study to installation, but also having to meet the needs of the young guys,” Thomas said during OTAs. “From the very novice of the installation to Dom, who’s kind of in the middle of trying to create that next-level step for him, it’s been interesting.”

Thomas said Ryan has been a huge help in developing the young QBs behind him and has, in turn, made it easier for Thomas to meet the needs of every level of learning in the room.

With so much change in chemistry and dynamic within that one small meeting room, it’s a wonder none of it has affected Ryan — and that’s something Thomas thinks is a credit to Ryan’s personality.

“Matt’s personality makes that dynamic pretty easy because his interaction with a lot of different personality types is very seemless,” Thomas said. “JP and Red are different personalities than, say, Luke McCown was last year, but Matt takes that dynamic and creates some cohesion there, which has been good. That’s helped us with Dom and Seth and Sean coming in. He’s helped those guys be very comfortable in the situation and I think Matt tries to maximize the benefits of it, however it’s set up.”
