Who would have thought putting linebackers Paul Worrilow and Brian Banks in the same locker for Thursday night’s game would cause a media melee after the game?

Banks, of course, is a frequent guest in front of the microphone due to his background of spending 10 years outside of football because of a crime he didn’t commit. But his lockermate was just another face before 60 minutes of football against Cincinnati.

Worrilow came into Thursday night’s game in the second quarter and quickly went from a name on the depth chart to a fan favorite.

The undrafted rookie out of Delaware recorded an astounding 11 tackles in his preseason debut and was a bit surprised at the attention he received because of it.

“I just came in and wanted to play the best possible I could,” he said. “I anticipated coming in after the starters got their reps. That was the plan. That was what I prepared for.”

And prepared is exactly how he looked. He had some rookie mistakes, sure. But he caught an awful lot of attention for his positive plays.

As Worrilow fielded questions from the media, veteran linebacker Stephen Nicholas interrupted, saying “Tell ‘em what I taught you, Worrilow!”

Worrilow will be the first to admit he still has a lot to learn, but he brings a ton of leadership and versatility to the Falcons roster. He played Sam, Will and Mike linebacker in college — sometimes spending time at each during a single game, he said.

While at Delaware, the four-year starter led the Blue Hens with 107 total tackles (57 solo) in 2012 while adding nine tackles for loss and three sacks.

Worrilow relished in the opportunity to get his first NFL hits in against a team in a different color jersey. And he made the most of it.

“It felt a little better to actually finish on the ball and run full-speed, be able to run through ball-carriers,” Worrilow said with a smile. “That’s always a plus.”
