Davis Shows Improvement in Second Game

Last season, the Falcons came out of the preseason with a lot confidence in then-rookie quarterback Dominique Davis — an undrafted product of East Carolina by way of Boston College. The Falcons added a veteran before the season, but keeping Davis around showed faith in the young signal-caller to become a viable backup behind Matt Ryan.

His preseason got started last week against Cincinnati in tough fashion, going 8-for-19 with 78 yards and an interception in his limited time in the game. But as Davis said after Thursday night’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens, he just tries to get better each week, and he did just that seven days after that first preseason game.

Davis finished 8-of-10 with 98 yards and a quarterback rating of 107.5, leading all Falcons passers against Baltimore.

“I just took it one play at a time, took what they gave me and believed in what the coaches tell me to do,” Davis said after Thursday’s game. “I just went out there and executed.”

If all goes as it currently stands, Davis will be the No. 2 to Ryan when the Falcons get the regular season going against the Saints on Sept. 8, with Sean Renfree or Seth Doege at the No. 3 spot.

Seeing the bright flashes that Davis provided Thursday night, Davis looks like he’s getting more comfortable, finding a rhythm with all his options and gelling with his teammates.

“Execution is key,” Davis said. “I was just taking what they were giving me. Most of them were just dumpoffs to the running backs and get those guys into space and let them make the play. Shoutout to the O-line, too. They did a good job of protecting me. It was just an overall good game.”
