Holmes Continues Learning On the Job

Lamar Holmes is vying to be the favorite to earn the starting right tackle position, and this preseason has been all about learning lessons on the job.

Holmes was expected to compete with Mike Johnson for the starting role there, but Johnson was lost for the season with a leg injury during training camp. That automatically thrust Holmes into the spotlight for the starting position and he’s been making each game a learning experience.

Saturday night was another as Holmes got a lot of reps with the first-team offense and faced a strong pass rush from Tennessee. The starting offensive line was credited with giving up four sacks and Holmes is intent on drawing from the bad snaps as much as he can from the good snaps as a decision at that position looms.

“I’ve been able to learn a lot from my teammates — no matter what it is, they’ve always been able to help me,” Holmes said after Saturday night’s preseason loss to Tennessee. “You have to be able to (take a lot from tough games). You can sit there and dwell on it forever and you’ll never be able to improve. It’s something that happens. You learn from it, you grow from it — you get better.”

Holmes, who’s currently competing with undrafted rookie Ryan Schraeder for the starting right tackle spot, will have another opportunity next week when the Falcons host the Jaguars in the preseason finale.

This week, he’ll watch film and draw as much as he can from watching himself and learning what more he needs to improve on as the race for the starting spot continues.

“I feel good,” Holmes said. “I’ve just gotta keep playing — just keep my head up and keep playing.”
