Vaughan Hoping Phone Doesn’t Ring This Time

Josh Vaughan knows all too well about what happens from here.

A member of the Tampa Bay Bucs and Carolina Panthers before signing on with the Falcons during the regular season in 2012 as a member of the practice squad, Vaughan has been here before.

He finishes the preseason and the phone rings — never a good sign for a hopeful trying to make an NFL roster.

With the Falcons’ preseason coming to a close Thursday night, the running back is heading into the weekend hoping that his story finally changes and his phone goes silent.

That would mean he had earned a spot on the 53-man roster, and after the preseason he’s had, he’s put together a solid body of work that will certainly make for a difficult decision as the coaching staff makes final cuts this weekend.

“I’ve been in this position. I’ve been released plenty of times before,” Vaughan said. “I know that you just have to make the most of the opportunities and I’m just thankful that the Falcons gave me a shot and I leave the rest in the Lord’s hands.”

Vaughan made a strong final impression Thursday night in a loss to Jacksonville. The first carry he got his hands on, he took 65 yards for a touchdown — the longest play for the Falcons all preseason.

He finished with five carries for 83 yards, leading the Falcons in rushing. Battling for a backup role at the running back position is difficult with Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling firmly entrenched in their roles. Antone Smith has been a vital special teams cog at the final RB spot for a few years now and Vaughan would have to unseat him to get that 53-man spot, or the Falcons would have to carry five running backs.

“My faith and trust is in the Lord after it’s all said and done,” he said. “Whoever makes the decisions, they make the decisions, but I’m satisfied with what I was able to do out there during the offseason and out there on the field. Whatever happens, happens. I’m happy and I’m satisfied.”
