Falcons Want to ‘Stop Streak at One’

It’s a safe bet that head coach Mike Smith’s 24-hour rule won’t need to be enforced this week. The Falcons are looking to move on from Sunday’s loss already.

There were a lot of positives on the Falcons’ side throughout the game, but the missed opportunities and what could have been make it impossible to focus on the good things.

Smith likes his players to move on — win or lose — by 24 hours after the conclusion of the previous game, and the only reason they’ll revisit anything that happened Sunday is to correct the mistakes made against their NFC South rivals.

“It’s the first game of the season. It’s a long journey,” Smith said. “We are very anxious to get back to Flowery Branch to get the mistakes corrected and move on to the next ballgame. We’ve got to do that as a team. Our motto has always been, since we’ve been here, to stop the streak at one.”

Since taking over the Falcons in 2008, Smith is 21-4 in games after a loss — strong evidence that the team will know how to rebound after the loss to the Saints on Sunday.

Now, it’s a matter of getting back and working on the mistakes and issues. The Falcons left several opportunities on the field throughout the game — a trend that continued up to the very last few offensive plays when the Falcons couldn’t punch in a go-ahead touchdown with less than a minute left.

From an early red zone trip that resulted in a field goal to an interception by William Moore that ended up just out of his grasp to a Robert Alford interception that was followed by a three-and-out, the Falcons saw several chances to get control of the ballgame, but couldn’t capitalize.

“We had some chances to make a lot of big plays, but for whatever reason, it didn’t fall our way today,” rookie cornerback Desmond Trufant said. “But we’re going to get better. We’re going to learn as a team, watch the film and we’ll be ready next week.”
